Chain Hire – Ben Lomond Base

Driving to Ben Lomond during winter means being prepared. Between 1 June and 30 September, all vehicles entering Ben Lomond National Park must carry snow chains, including 4WD and AWD vehicles.

Snow chains are required to drive beyond the lower National Park car park and continue up to the Village car park when winter chain requirements are in place. Chains are not necessarily required if you are parking in the lower National Park car park only, however conditions can change quickly and carrying chains during the winter period is mandatory.

Jacobs Ladder is a steep alpine section of road where conditions can change rapidly. Even if the lower road appears clear, chains may still be required higher up the mountain.

When Do I Need To Fit Chains?

Chains are fitted only when directed by roadside signage or Parks staff, or when conditions require them for safe driving.

You must fit chains when:

• Roadside signage indicates chains must be fitted
• Directed by Parks and Wildlife officers
• Snow or ice is covering the road surface
• The road is slippery, compacted with snow, or visibly frozen
• You experience wheel spin or reduced traction

Even 4WD and AWD vehicles must fit chains when required.

The Most Affordable and Flexible Way to Visit

Hiring chains and driving yourself is the most affordable way to visit Ben Lomond during winter.

There is no need to wait in lengthy bus queues or work around shuttle departure times. You have the flexibility to:

• Arrive when it suits you
• Leave when you are ready
• Stay warm and comfortable in your own vehicle
• Avoid delays and added transport costs

With chain hire, you are in control of your day.

Chain Hire Options

When booking, simply select how many days you would like to hire chains for.

Day Hire

Chain hire is available for the calendar day only. Chains must be returned the same day unless overnight hire has been selected.

Overnight and Multi Day Hire

Overnight and multi day hire options are available for guests staying on the mountain or returning the following day.

Tyre Size and Correct Fitting

It is essential that chains match your exact tyre size. Before arriving, please check your tyre sidewall and provide your tyre size to our staff.

Your tyre size will look similar to this example: 225/60R17

We recommend taking a clear photo of your tyre size on your phone and showing it to our team. This ensures the correct chain size is issued for your vehicle.

• Chains are supplied for one vehicle only
• Chains must match your tyre size
• You must carry chains in your vehicle during the winter requirement period
• Chains are fitted only when directed by signage, Parks staff, or when road conditions require them

Before fitting chains, please read your vehicle user manual to confirm where chains are to be fitted on your specific vehicle.

The fitting and removal of chains is the driver’s responsibility. Any damage caused to vehicle(s) during fitting, removal or use of chains is the full responsibility of the vehicle operator.
